Why Is Deck Repair Important

When decks get older, it is not just splintering that you need to worry about. Deck boards can lift, and that can provide a tripping hazard, boards can become slippery and unsafe if the finish is weathered, and structural damage can make a deck unsafe.

You don’t want anyone slipping on your deck or falling down shaky steps.

Taking care of your deck means taking care of the people around you. If your deck feels unsafe, stop using it immediately and give us a call.

5 Signs You Need To Repair Your Deck

There are some obvious signs that your deck needs to be repaired, and you should keep an eye on your deck to ensure that it remains safe. Here are some things to look for.

Wood Support Beams & Posts Start To Rot

If you have an elevated deck, you should always check underneath every season to make sure that the wood support posts and beams are not rotting. You can do this with a ground-level deck too, and it is important that you do not use the deck if you notice signs of structural damage. If the supports start to rot, the deck could collapse at a moment’s notice. It may be the deck is old and the rot has appeared over time or it could be signs of foundational damage.

Cracks Or Splinters In Deck Boards

If deck boards crack or splinter, especially if it is widespread then is usually a sign of a bigger problem. If you notice it happening to your deck, catch it early and give us a call to come out and take a look. If caught early, we can replace some boards, or we can diagnose any bigger problems and fix those too. Take care of who is using the deck as small children can easily get splinters when playing on a deck.

Loose Railings

When rails are loose, this removes stability from the deck and makes it more dangerous for anyone who is using the deck. Children, the elderly, and the infirm are not going to have anything to hold onto when traversing the deck, and this can result in falls. If the railings are loose, they can also give way at any time, and that could mean someone falling from your deck. If any part of your deck becomes unstable, give us a call to come out and take a look.

Termite Damage

Termite damage can be hard to spot, but there may be some signs. First, you may notice them on or in the wood, but they will likely be confined to the inside. There may be small grey casings or excrement on your deck and, if there is termite damage in any wood close to your deck, there is a good chance that they are in your deck too. Finally, check to see if your boards sound hollow.

Gaps Between The Deck And House

It does not matter if your deck is attached to your home or not, if there is a gap between the deck and your home, then you could have a big problem on your hands. The main cause is going to be a shift in the foundation, and there is a chance that it can be fixed easily and without too much expense. For larger problems, you may have to replace the foundations, and that could even mean replacing the entire deck.
